How can we protect ourselves or our loved ones?
Don’t put off the conversation.
Get an LPA for health and/or finance early; it’s not just the vulnerable who need them. Have a discussion with family and loved ones to decide who can take on the responsibility. Decide what actions or, in some cases, what actions not to take. This means everything is transparent and open.
Appoint more than one Attorney.
Having a family member or loved one as an attorney ensures the donor's wishes are considered. Be transparent, make it clear. Understand What an LPA Means
Those setting up or relying on LPAs should be fully informed about their rights, the powers being granted, and how these can be monitored.
